How Chiropractors Approach Whiplash-Type Neck Injuries
· · 1 min read · Castelli Chiropractic Center

Whiplash describes a rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, most often after a rear-end collision. The term describes a mechanism, not a single diagnosis.
Common symptoms
People frequently report neck stiffness, reduced range of motion, headache originating at the base of the skull, and shoulder or upper-back tension. Symptoms often begin or intensify a day or two after the event.
Evaluation first
Because the neck is involved, evaluation is careful and specific. It includes a symptom history, an examination of motion and neurological function, and imaging when findings support it. Some presentations call for medical referral rather than chiropractic care.
Conservative care approaches
When findings support conservative care, an approach may include gentle joint care adapted to your tolerance, soft-tissue work, and a graded return to normal motion through exercise. Technique choice is adjusted to comfort and examination findings.
- Care adapted to your tolerance rather than a standard protocol
- Soft-tissue work for surrounding muscles
- Gradual restoration of motion through exercise
- Review of progress at set points
